The
SD-60M was designed to be used in heavy drag or medium duty
freight service. They were promoted as replacements for SD40
and SD40-2 locomotives. The first SD-60's were 4 demonstrator
units, which toured the country in 1984. The first production
units were built in 1984 for Norfolk Southern. In 1988, the
"wide nose" or "safety cab" was first
offered as an option to US Railroads. Union Pacific received
the first units in early 1989. In 1991 the contour of the
nose was changed slightly, going form a 3-piece to a 2-piece
windshield, and tapering the sides of the nose to improve
visibility for the crew. Burlington Northern was the first
recipient of the revised model.
