During
the late 1980s, the railroads had succeeded in
making intermodal trailers a viable part of our
transportation network. The then standard 45' trailer
eventually gave way to the new 48' standard length.
Pines, a trailer manufacturer of the period, offered
an intermodal version of a 48' trailer that eventually
became very popular with the railroads and private
intermodal companies. Today, thousands of these
trailers still ride the steel rails delivering
packages and products all over the country.
