Coke
Service Gondolas
GCCX
GATX Corp. Coke Service Train covered gondolas. These cars
are used
to carry petroleum coke from oil refineries
to steel mills. Coke is used in blast furnaces because
it lacks the impurities of coal that would contaminate
the iron and it doesn't "pack down" like coal
which inhibits the air flow in the furnace. Coke is usually
associated with coal but it is also a by-product of oil
refining. These cars move in small groups in mixed freights
or complete unit trains. The GCCX reporting marks belong
to GATX Corporation (yes, the tank car people.) The cars
were purchased second hand from New Hampshire Public
Service and re-lettered for GCCX. The new road numbers
were made from an odd mix of mis-matched stencils so
the lettering styles vary from digit to digit and car
to car. This release is available in 12 different road
numbers.
These cars are equipped with Micro-Trains Line trucks
and couplers.
