NSN presents the first in a new series, Scenic Helpers:
SH001: Tunnel Portal #11, sized to allow extra height
railcars
roll through a tunnel that captures the look, feel
and texture of the real thing. This "massive
stone"
outcropping comes complete with all the the detail
shown above.
The portal is a huge 6” x 9” x 1” urethane
casting made from a mold created by doing what the big
guys did… (Blasting powder and dynamite! No we didn’t
use those...we went a little more modern)… It is
made from a slice of real rock with the portal cut out
using
a very expensive diamond saw blade, that cut
away a slice of the portal at a time.
Until, after quite a bit of work, the correct portal shape
emerged from the rock.
As with all things railroad, the portal was surveyed from
the railhead up to assure clearances that conform the N
Trak’s Modern Track Clearances: the N scale standard.
As you might suspect an RTV tool was made for casting replicas
of the original sculpting. Now, for the first time in N
scale, you really can put a great face on your favorite
tunnel ... with NSN's Tunnel Portal #11.
