Santa
Fe "El Capitan"
Re-live some great moments in history in miniature with Kato's "El Capitan".
Usually pulled by an F7A-B-B-A lashup during the last half of the 1950's -- the
period selected by Kato to base their new set on. "The "El Capitan" offered coach
travel between Chicago and Los Angeles using hi-level coaches, a diner and lounge.
It usually had 10 cars but during the summer it increased to 12 cars.
Kato selected the most popular time period
of 1956 through 1958 when this train
was operated, promoted and advertised
by the AT&SF Railroad as its premier
all coach hi-level train between Chicago and Los Angeles with a transition
car and step-down cars with operating tail lights and a drumhead on the rear
of one of the 68 seat coach cars.
In January 1958, the "El Capitan" and the "Super Chief" were consolidated
but during the high traffic periods (Christmas and the summer months), the
"El Capitan" ran separate from the "Super Chief".
Kato's new release will give you the opportunity to operate this "El Capitan"
along with the Kato "Super Chief" (previously released) with all of the correct
cars. The combined train was frequently pulled by 5 locomotives, an F7A-A-B-B-A
lashup.

(1) hi-level 68 sea coach (step-down)
(5) hi-level 72 seat coaches
(1) 80 seat diner
(1) lounge (2 bars)
(1) hi-level 68 seat coach (with tail light/tail sign)

Fe EMD F-3's new Late version |
This new release shows and F3 LATE version. While retaining the distinctive F3 roof detail, note that the "chicken wire" grill has been replaced with the stailnless steel version as used on EMD F7 production models.
| Santa Fe’s F3’s were such successful and long lived units, they received many upgrades, with late era revisions having their distinctive “chicken wire” grills replaced by the stainless steel grills that EMD was fitting on their newer F7 productions. These F3’s ended up looking remarkably similar to their later built F7 cousins, though they still retained their early style roof fans. This is an all new model - the first time in N scale from Kato. They are expected to be available in late March. The "A" unit will come with road #21 installed with a 2nd number board that can be user installed. |
